A team from College of the North Atlantic developed renewable energy innovation using fish waste

Students from the College of the North Atlantic (CNA) have earned top honours at the school’s first-ever virtual econext Ideathon. The winning team, named Hydro Heroes, presented a creative project that transforms fish waste into renewable energy—a concept aimed at tackling both environmental and economic challenges in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Held in partnership with econext, the Ideathon challenged students to identify pressing environmental issues and propose sustainable solutions. Teams competed remotely, drawing on their classroom experience to design projects with real-world impact.

“Events like this demonstrate how CNA students can apply what they’re learning to solve critical problems in our communities,” said a representative from CNA’s Office of Applied Research and Innovation. “The Hydro Heroes project is a perfect example of clean growth thinking in action.”

Innovation Rooted in Local Industry

The idea of using fish waste reflects the province’s strong ties to the fishing sector. By converting organic waste into energy, the project aims to reduce landfill use while producing renewable power—a concept that could have long-term benefits for both the environment and rural communities.

The virtual format allowed students from across CNA’s 17 campuses to collaborate without the barriers of distance. Organizers say this approach not only increased participation but also helped students develop digital collaboration skills that are increasingly important in the workplace.

About the econext Ideathon

The econext Ideathon is a clean technology competition designed to spark innovation in Newfoundland and Labrador. This was CNA’s first time hosting the event, which took place earlier this spring and concluded with the winners announced on May 20, 2025.

Participating teams used marketing frameworks and research techniques from their programs to pitch solutions ranging from energy efficiency to waste reduction. Hydro Heroes ultimately took the top spot for their combination of environmental impact and practical feasibility.
